The High Line

Section 1 of the High Line — Gansevoort Street to 20th Street — will open to the public on June 9, 2009. Park hours will be 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily.

"The High Line was built in the 1930s, as part of a massive public-private infrastructure project called the West Side Improvement. It lifted freight traffic 30 feet in the air, removing dangerous trains from the streets of Manhattan's largest industrial district. No trains have run on the High Line since 1980. Friends of the High Line, a community-based non-profit group, formed in 1999 when the historic structure was under threat of demolition. Friends of the High Line works in partnership with the City of New York to preserve and maintain the structure as an elevated public park."

Great interview with Deborah Schwartz (dsreps.com) on the biz and obtaining a Rep over on A Photo Editor.

Took the words right out of my mouth...

"Some people think that a rep is just there to get you the work, but I am one half of a team. Photographers need to be proactive in getting out there themselves shooting personal work, meeting with people and getting editorial work. In order to make it, you have to be really likable, professional, responsible and a really fantastic photographer. If you are all of these things, you will be getting work and you will need a rep on your team.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is they have a portfolio and then they just wait for the work to come in. If you aren’t constantly pushing yourself and growing as a photographer–you see this all the time where the work doesn’t change and the book is the same from year to year–then you’re dead in the water and not getting work and will continue to not get work. You need to be testing and shooting for yourself all of the time."

ICP Infinity Awards

Looks like I will be attending the ICP Infinity Awards tomorrow night...for photo opps and cocktails at least!! Enormous thanks to photographer David Lewis Taylor for the invite!

Past years have brought out Ryan McGinley, Karl Lagerfeld, Calvin Klein, Sean Lennon, Loretta Lux, Jay Maisel, Mark Seliger...well you get the idea. Interested to see who will turn up this year.

Now...what does a girl wear to something of this caliber!?!

Spotted in the crowd...Timothy Greenfield Sanders, Annie Leibowitz, and IMAN (!) to name a few. It was the elitest of photo industry events, and the elite all knew eachother. Myself and David had a fantastic time...regardless of how impossible it was to strike a conversation with a suit and tie.
